About pairs trading: Pairs trading is a trading strategy that has been popular at quantitative hedge funds for many years. It is based on a simple idea. Two stocks are identified that tend to travel together. When a larger than normal gap opens between their prices, the cheaper stock is bought long and the more expensive one is sold short. When the gap reverts to its historical mean, the position is closed and a profit is collected.
